Grandpa Thurber's Funeral

Ironically, while the kids were visiting with one Great-Grandpa, their other one passed away.  It was only a matter of a few weeks from the diagnosis of Lymphatic cancer to when he passed. I never thought I would be able to attend the funeral, but the timing could not have been better.  I heard the sad news while we were in Kansas.  I assumed I couldn't go since a last-minute flight would be too expensive.  I looked at flights on South West Airlines and it was about $1,000 for me to fly out!  But Erik looked and found one on United that was less than half the cost. Yay! And it worked out just right--I could take Ian, fly out Friday evening (the very same day we were heading home anyway) and Erik would watch the kids for the weekend.  I had just about everything packed anyway.  Erik dropped me and Ian off at Bush Airport on the way back home. Elisa had a hard time seeing me off to the airport.  Poor baby, but she got over it.
Ian was okay on the flight.  He cried a little bit, but mostly slept.  I was fortunate to have an empty seat (actually, someone gave up their seat!) next to me.
I stayed with my sister Lisa in West Jordan. We got to her house really late so I pretty much just went to bed that night. The next morning I was so excited to see everyone, especially my niece and nephew.  I kind of wished Elisa and Gabe could come (kind of!) so that the cousins could see each other.
The funeral was in the morning at an LDS chapel in West Valley.  As soon as I got there, I was asked if I could play a piano solo.  Ha! I told them I had nothing prepared and no music with me even if I did. We decided to do a hymn arrangement instead of me doing a solo, and all of the Thurber kids would sing while I accompanied.  Although, I didn't just accompany-I included a spruced-up solo of one of the verses.  I can't remember which hymn we picked.  So for most of the viewing, I practiced my solo part in one of the rooms.  My dad watched Ian while he slept in his car seat.
It was a really nice, happy ceremony. More of a celebration of his life rather than a mourning.  Our musical number went pretty well I thought.  I am happy that I was able to play something for the funeral, after all, Grandpa was always encouraging of my piano playing.  He always wanted to hear me play, even if I wasn't all that great.
After the musical number, a few (as in most) of his kids (my aunts and uncles) shared a few memories of him.  After, we all went to the cemetery and took pictures. I thought my grandma (Viola) would be having a really hard time (they were married for almost 60 years), but she seemed fine.  I have been told that she is developing some sort of dementia, and she herself told me she doesn't remember things very well anymore.  We then went back to the church and had a yummy lunch.  It was nice to catch up with family I hadn't seen in forever.  Then I went back to Lisa's house and hung out for the rest of the evening.  I loooved seeing my sweet niece Aaliyah and cute little Aiden (Bubsie).  I didn't want to go home, but alas, my flight was scheduled to leave Sunday morning.
I am soooo very glad I got to attend the funeral!  Everything worked out just perfect.  I would have liked to have stayed longer, but we bought tickets to go out again in July to see everyone again!  I am sad that we won't get to see Grandpa Thurber anymore.  We have always made time to go visit him (them, rather) while in Utah, but unfortunately that obviously won't be one of our stops anymore.  Their house will be (actually is) sold and everything in it has been claimed by his family.  My grandma will be staying with my  Aunt Merline in American Fork (or is it Spanish Fork? I never can remember).   The flight home was ok.  Ian fussed a little, but slept most of the way.
And finally, a little blurb from my own Facebook page:

My Grandpa Thurber was the sweetest, funniest, and most caring man! I've always loved playing the piano for him and I especially loved that I had the opportunity to play at his funeral. Thank you Grandpa T for fostering and sharing my love of music. And for sending me my very first Chopin piano book

Kansas Trip

After the recital finally finished, we left for Kansas.  We drove for about 4 hours that night (Sunday, June 7th) and stopped somewhere just outside of Dallas.  The next day was more driving.  We stopped at Braum's in OK for lunch.  The kids must have been okay for the drive because I don't really remember much of it. We got to our Ramada Hotel that we go to every year and just waited around for an hour for Erik's parents to come.  The kids had so much fun on this trip!  The only disappointing thing this time around was that the rules for the water slide in the hotel had changed since last year, so Elisa wasn't allowed to go on it this time, not even as a lap rider.  Here are some pictures from the trip:

At the hotel near Dallas.  The kids LOVE hotels!

Yum yum!
Erik loves it when I take these pictures

So cute! Both of them.

Finally there!

My beautiful kids, waiting patiently for Grandma and Grandpa

Elevator fun!
My Ian-bean, 4 months old here.  Getting bigger!

The awesome hotel pool & slide.  Too bad Elisa couldn't go on the slide

Playing and waiting

My pretty girl, trying to run away from me and grumpy that I wouldn't let her.

Getting bigger and stronger!

Out for dinner at Cracker Barrel

Breakfast time! Ramada serves full & free breakfasts.

And doing what we mostly came up to Kansas for--visiting with (great) Grandpa Raper.  He hadn't been doing so well (I think he might have had a stroke), but I think he is okay now.  It was nice for the kids to see him.  Here are some pictures I took.  My good camera died and I forgot to bring the charger, so there are a lot of grainy iPod ones:

A visit to the train Park (Gage Park).  I didn't go; I stayed in the hotel room and watched the Food Network while Ian napped.  And I also think this was before our visit to see Grandpa Raper, because these were taken with the good camera, oh well.  It looks like the kids had lots of fun!

We went to Rees Fruit Farm, like we do every year.  We sampled some fruit leather, donuts, icecream, and cold apple cider.  Yum! The kids enjoyed looking at the bees and all of the knick-knacks around the store.

And a few more:

Seriously Cute!

Hanging out with Grandpa at Red Lobster

Fun with Grandma!

Elisa makes her own fun!

The kids had so much fun.  They loved all the activities, but especially swimming.  Byt their favorite part of all was being with Grandma and Grandpa (and aunt Makayla). All in all it was a great trip! except the part when my Grandpa Thurber died.  So coming up next:  My grandpa Thurber's Funeral.
