Utah Visit with Elisa, Part II (Himitsu Station and Shopping)

May 3,2026
As part of Elisa's many gifts, I booked us (us as in me, Elisa, Aaliyah, and Lisa) an escape room session in Salt Lake called Himitsu Station. Lisa told me about it before I even bought plane tickets. It looked like something fun to do. Elisa is a huge fan of Japanese culture, so I signed us all up. It was quite expensive for four people. I made Lisa pay her own way, but I did pay for Aaliayah's ticket. Looking back, I should have just paid for all of us. Oh well.
It was a totally immersive experience. We walked into a Japanese train station straight from the 1950's. Then we were led through an ice cream machine, of all things, to the escape room itself. I should say rooms. This was a little bit different than a traditional escape room where you are only released/win if you figure out how to escape (hence the name). For Himitsu, we were promoted to the next room regardless of whether we figured out all the puzzles or not. The goal wasn't to figure out how to escape, but rather to collect "soul coins" by solving as many puzzles as possible. Sometimes they were given out just because. The first room was a little overwhelming. There was so much stuff packed into the room, it was hard to figure out what to do at first. We solved a few puzzles, but overall, I would give us a C- grade on our puzzle-solving. These rooms are timed, so regardless of how few or how many puzzles were solved and soul coins earned, they moved us along after a certain time. The next room was "boiler room." This was the room Lisa helped out the most with. I was waaaay overthinking this room believing that everything was a puzzle to solve, but in fact all we had to do was follow a few directions in order to perform a couple of physical activities. We got our soul coins and were able to move along to the next room.
The next two rooms were solved by mainly me and Elisa. Poor Aaliyah enjoyed the experience very much, but as far as helping solve puzzles, she stuck to her own world, let's just say. Lisa did try her best to help, but in reality, it was mostly me and Elisa who solved ALL the puzzles in both rooms. The last room was a restaurant, which Elisa helped me a lot with. Mostly it was just adding things up and using elementary math to figure out. We ended up with 12 (or 14?) soul coins. The employee said we got about as many as a group of 6 would, so good job to us. One of the best parts of this experience was all the free ("free") snacks at the snack bar. We could take what we wanted and however much we wanted. I loaded up! Well, not too much in order to not look like a greedy weirdo but enough to keep me munching happily on them for the next day or two.

Waiting for our session to start

Entrance is through the ice cream machine!

In one of the rooms, trying to figure out what's what. Some items/decorations were just there for looks, and others were the key to solving a puzzle...

We did it! That was fun. Maybe we will do it again someday and get even more soul coins.

May 4. The next day was my last day, and we (Lisa, me, and my mom) made sure to make the most of it! First, we dropped the girls off at the Classic Fun Center. Elisa and Aaliyah had a good time, except for the part when Elisa lost the $20 in cash that I gave her. I told her right before leaving, "Don't lose the money," I guess she only heard the "lose it" part haha. While they were skating their little teenage hearts out, we went to lunch at a restaurant that none of us had tried before, Tin Roof Grill. The food was alright--the fish and chips were especially good--but man was it expensive for a diner. Lisa didn't like it at all. So, I guess that was the first and last time at that restaurant. Then we went to Goodwill. I can't remember if I found anything good (probably not, I couldn't take much back anyway), but Lisa always finds stuff. Then we picked up the girls and went to Ross just to look because I didn't find anything worth buying.  Then we went to the Blaylock's house to make sure Elisa had all of her things to pack. We took some pictures and headed back to my parent's house with Aaliyah in tow too. She is Elisa's shadow! I discovered that our flight had been delayed (no big surprise for Frontier), so we had a couple more hours to kill. Elisa hung out with Aaliayh while me and my mom got our toes done at a nail salon. Our flight left much later than planned, which meant we got home pretty late--around 11. I, unfortunately, had to sit next to the stinkiest, most foul-smelling woman I've ever had the displeasure of sitting by. I had to continually put my Bath and Body Works hand sanitizer in my hands and take breaths through it as to not faint from that woman's odor. Yikes. Besides that, a very fun (albeit short) trip up to Utah! Elisa sure got spoiled with a good time!

I can't remember why I took this picture at the Blaylocks's while I was waiting for Elisa to get her stuff together.

Utah Visit with Elisa, Part I (Birthday Treats)

In celebration of Elisa's 15th birthday, we flew (Frontier) up to SLC so that she could spend some time with her cousins. Somehow, they always schedule the father/son campout on her birthday weekend, so it was no big deal for Elisa and me to go up to Utah since Erik and the boys would be gone a night anyway. Our flight left Friday, May 1 in the morning, around 11am. Erik let me take his car and got us premium parking as well. It took a few minutes for me to find a spot. Thankfully the flight wasn't delayed like it was last year. Elisa and I sat apart, but it's only an hour flight, so no big deal.
I'm pretty sure it was Lisa who picked us up from the airport. The girls are always happy to see each other. We only spent a few days up in Utah, but they were filled with lots of fun. Here are the pictures I took:

While the girls were at the park, Lisa and I stopped in Sephora. Lisa made good use of the in-store samples, and I went to the counter to claim Elisa's free birthday gifts, which were a few perfumes that she didn't care for too much. I kept telling Lisa to get going because it was almost time to pick up the girls. She ignored me until I was checking out at the counter, and then she loudly interrupted us by telling me to hurry up and that it was time to go haha!

May 1-Lisa trying on as much makeup as she could, it was all fun until one of the products she used started to peel off her face.

May 2

Elisa's actual birthday. We made sure she had lots of fun. She and Aaliyah's favorite place to go is Angel Devil desserts. I let her order whatever she wanted. She got a drink, a strawberry and a grape tanghulu, which she almost choked on.
The girls enjoyed their drinks.

Grandma came with

I thought I said Elisa, but the dude must have heard "Hi Lisa" haha.

While Lisa and my mom and I shopped around (I think we went Buckle), the girls looked around Hot Topic. I bought both of them some stuff. Aaliyah asked for a hat and a shirt, so I bought her those. After we checked out, an employee hosted a trivia contest with a spin and win. Elisa got the trivia question correctly (something about the Demon Hunters movie) and got to spin! She won a free shirt! So, we went back inside, and she found a shirt from one of her favorite anime shows, the Apothecary diaries.

Then we had lunch at their favorite restaurant, CupBop. My mom and I shared a cup. I would like them better if there was more good stuff and less rice/noodles or if their prices were a little lower. The girls also really like their fish-shaped ice cream treats.

Enjoying their Cupbop meal.

After eating, I picked up a full cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes. Elisa had chosen red velvet flavor. It was yummy and took a few days to devour. We invited Isabelle over to celebrate Elisa's birthday. The girls had a fun time giggling and eating cake.
Enjoying some girl time on the trampoline

Isabelle and Elisa about to enjoy the cake. There was so much frosting on this cake, which I normally like but this cake had an excessive amount.

Random April Happenings, Part II (Erik's MCO Performance, Ian's Band Concert, Elisa's Early Birthday)

April 24-25
Erik's parents came down to see his MCO's Spring/patriotic concert. They came down a day or two before. Before the concert, Elisa, Grandma, and I went to Goodwill, the local Farmer's Market, and then Michaels (made some free bracelets and got some balloons) and then stopped in Bath and Body Works. Erik had an earlier performance before our scheduled show (ours was the very last) so we drove down to Mesa and picked up food that Erik had ordered at Joe's Farm Grill. The food was okay except we had no drinks and no napkins. The kids were thirsty, so we went to a McDonald's drive through for some drinks. They got our order wrong, so we had to go through again. We ate some in the car, and then some just outside the Mesa Arts Center with Erik. The concert was very patriotic with almost all USA-themed songs, and even if they weren't directly USA themed, the blurb given by Brandon before the song somehow tied it to being a patriotic song.  The concert was good; I think the kids liked it. I wore my patriotic shirt and earrings. I saw a few people from our ward at the concert, I'm glad we're getting the word out about the MCO!

April 24
Erik, his parents, and I ate at State 48 Rock House. It was pretty good--I think I really liked the fries.

April 25
Going shopping with Grandma and Elisa

Ian with his meal from Joe's Farm Grill. It was a Sonoran hotdog, I don't think Ian even finished it.

Here are a few videos that Erik took during rehearsals, they sound amazing already!

We had a decent view of Erik when they came out on the balcony

"Call of the Champions" by John Williams. I liked when Erik was on the balcony so we could see him better.

I'm So Blessed...the kids have strong feelings against this song, but I like it. I believe it was the last song of the evening; you can hear and see the enthusiasm the choir has for this song! They sang it a few years back in their Spring concert.

I got back into playing with my beads. I really like bead embroidering stuff. I made a bunch of pins and magnets. I didn't take pictures of everything I made, but I did get a picture of this kitty pin.

April 29
Ian had his last band concert of the school year. I really wish the school had an auditorium/stage (or at least used the high school's) because it is always so hard to see Ian, let alone get pictures of him, but Erik got a few. And a bonus picture just after the concert of me and Ian. Ian plays the trombone and seems to enjoy it!

April 30
The glass on the dryer door got busted. I'm not sure exactly what happened or how this happened, but I'm pretty sure it was from metal things clanging around that were attached to Elisa's jeans. I can't think of anything else, other than maybe someone slammed the door too hard. My thought was to run to Lowe's and buy some heat-resistant tape and tape up the glass. Erik poo-pooed my idea and then closed the door and reopened the door, and that was when the glass just all fell out. When I first saw the door, the glass was shattered, but still intact.  If we had gone with my idea, we might have at least had a useable dryer while we waited for a new dryer door that Erik found on eBay. Erik switched out the glass and threw the new door away. It was dirty when we bought it, but we cleaned it up and you'd never know that it was glass from another dryer door.

Princess Elisa had a birthday coming up!  Elisa didn't want a big friend party, so we just had a small family party. Grandma and Grandpa left just in time to not be in attendance ha. She decided on pizza for dinner. Then she opened up a few gifts (her main gift was going up to Utah). Elisa really liked the little Nothing Bundt Cakes that I got for Erik and Gabe's birthday, so I got her some of those instead of a full cake. I can't believe my gwilly is already 15! I know I'll be saying that every year! This was just part of her birthday celebration...there is more fun to come! We really liked going up to Utah for her birthday last year, so I decided to take her up there again.

Pizza for dinner

Silly gwilly opening her gifts. I don't remember what was in this box, it could have been her Hades Melanie Martinez CD I got her, or it could have been something else entirely.

The kids put their money together and bought Tomodachi Life; they were the most excited about this game!
Singing Happy Birthday to the family princess--Happy 15th Birthday, Elisa!

Run Your Race Chocolate Bunny Race

Even though it was a little bit after Easter, Run Your Race still held a Chocolate Bunny race. Ian heard that there were donuts and a chocolate bunny at the end, so he agreed to run the kid's mile race. It is nice when I don't have to go by myself. I had been running the canal trail by our house all season long, so I felt prepared enough for this race, even though I'm a slow runner and I had actually been running slower than ever. I don't remember the actual running of this race--it all blends together with the other times I've run this path/race, and besides running is very monotonous so there's not too much to remember anyway. My time on this particular race wasn't my best, but it was better than my usual canal trail runs (these races usually are). When I went to check out my time, the woman at the stand said that they were having technological troubles and she just handed me a second-place pin! Later, when the technical issues had been fixed, I found out I had gotten 3rd place, so I placed anyway. The two women that had place ahead of me in first and second place had beaten me by a full 10 minutes! Well, I already knew that I'm a slow runner. But not too slow that I can't ever place!

After my race was the kid's 1-mile race. Ian had only run the trail with me once before this race, but he did fine. The kid's races aren't timed, but he ran his usual 13- or 14-minute mile. Ian runs for the after-race treats! He got a donut, a chocolate bunny, and even got to pick out some fun prizes.

I took a few pictures, but I was able to download some pictures that were taken by the Run Your Race photographer that were posted on their website.

Signing in to get my bib

At the finish line. From looking at these pictures, I'm thinking that my stride may be too small and that is why I'm such a slower runner..?

Ready to race!

Run, Ian, run!

Checking out the treats after the race

Prizes, donuts, and a chocolate bunny (not pictured). I'm pretty sure treats like these are the only way to get Ian to come to races with me!

Ian and me after running! I really like the Run Your Race company. The course is easy, the medals are pretty cool, and there's always lots of yummy treats after the race.
