Thanksgiving in Utah, Part I: Pre-Thanksgiving Fun

For Thanksgiving 2021 we went up to Utah to celebrate with family.

Sunday November 21st: As usual, our first stop was St. George. We left early Sunday morning, I would have liked to have left Friday after the kids got home from school, but Erik had to work Saturday. I think we hit a little traffic just before the gorge, but I can't remember all too well so it must not have been too bad.

Ian and Elisa insisted upon Panda Express for lunch. Erik and I got hamburgers from 5 Guys, and Gabe got a hotdog from 5 Guys.

I helped make dinner that evening. We made broccoli casserole and Irish Soda bread for a side. Even though I followed the recipe, I overcooked the broccoli (which I actually prefer doing, since it softens it and disperses it more evenly so there aren't big chunks) but I didn't like that the rice burned a little on the bottom. I'll use a different recipe next time, if there is a next time.

Monday November 22: As usual, I previously had set up a massage appointment for me and my mom at Zion Massage college that day, with lunch at Red Fort Indian cuisine after. My massage was ok, I was mostly annoyed that the girl kept coughing, and she even coughed right in my face. At least leave the vicinity and then cough, sheesh. Luckily, she didn't have anything contagious.  We had a delicious meal at Red Fort Cuisine and then went to Michaels where I bought some nice(r) acrylic paints, canvas, and a few other things, and then to Ross to buy some clothes for Gabe and Elisa, and a few Christmas gifts for Elisa as well. Gabe goofily wore his flip flops instead of his Sketcher shoes, so I bought a pair of shoes, but they were too small, so I took them back along with some other things the next day.

Waiting for our food!

My mom had a fun day!

Delicious food!

After massage, lunch, and shopping we went back to the house and my mom stayed for a little bit. It was too cold to swim (obviously), so we played a game of Clue instead:

My mom actually played with us! Ian played too but was a little too young to understand deduction strategies in order to win or even play the game.

Later that evening, when I was taking off my rings, I realized I had left one of my rings behind at the massage place! It was too late to call, but I called the next morning, and they had it save in an envelope for me. Phew.

Tuesday November 23-In the morning, I took Gabie-Roo to Sketchers to buy some new shoes since he only bought his flip-flops with. Besides, he needed new shoes anyway since he had been wearing his old ones from last year. But first, we stopped at the massage place to retrieve my ring. Gabe is almost in a men's size, but his feet are so narrow. We managed to find a pair that fit though. Since Sketchers was in an outdoor strip mall (The Shoppes at Zion), we were able to visit several stores, including Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory where I gave him a dollar to buy some chocolate coins, and a new novelty shop called Frenzy's (I think!) where I bought some saltwater taffy, a can of chocolate-covered bacon soda (yes, it's as gross as it sounds), and a Mario keychain for Gabe. Gabe geeked out when he saw the ginormous stuffed Mario plushies high on the wall and all the other Mario stuff. He told me he wanted the huge stuffed cat Mario for Christmas. I told him at almost $200, that was a little steep. Our last stop was Ross to take back a few items I had bought the day before. Anyway, a nice little shopping trip with Gabe that day before heading up to Cedar City.

Most of the time, the kids played and played and played in the basement. Sometimes with real toys, but mostly on the Nintendo System.

The over-sized Mario. To it's left (not pictured) was the Mario in a catsuit.

Before heading up to Cedar, we stopped to have some Chinese food at the Panda Garden. It was good, but not great. I could take it or leave it. The kids seemed to like it ok.

We had some fun making memes out of a silly photo of Elisa I took while there.

We got to St. George later that evening. I enjoyed (as usual) going through stuff in this basement. This time it was old journals of Lisa's.

My parents also had a new rowing machine that Gabe enjoyed being on. I didn't try it, but it looks kinda fun, at least as far as exercising goes.

Elisa slept in Tom's room. Neither she nor anyone else wanted her to have direct contact with Tom's mattress, so we put another mattress atop it. Girly slept pretty high that night!

Wednesday Nov. 24
Before driving up to the Salt Lake area, we stopped at the Pastry Pub in downtown Cedar. My parents didn't come but Erik's parents did! They were headed up to the Salt Lake area anyway for Thanksgiving at the Jensen's home. Our plans were slightly different; we planned Thanksgiving dinner at my sister Tootsie's house but then we met up with Grandma and Grandpa again for dessert at the Jensens. Erik wanted to do some Turkey prep so we stopped in a Tootsie and Marks house in Cedar hills, and Grandma and Grandpa were kind enough to take the kids to their Blaylock cousins who were impatiently waiting to see them!

We ate all of our food (mostly sandwiches) and Erik (before the food arrived) went next door to the FrenchSpot and grabbed us some desserts--creme brulee and a peach tart. Unfortunately, they were out of the chocolate mousse. The food was good, but the mural painting on the wall that I had to look at was really, really bad.

Erik prepping the Turkey that he smoked on Mark's new Traeger grill the next morning. My parents and Michael had already arrived at the house and were spending the night.

We spent the night at the Blaylocks. The kids sure enjoyed playing with each other! I'm not sure why I took this picture, but here's Gabe standing in their kitchen.

Random November Happenings, Part II (Mesa Temple Open House)

Here are more fun things we did in the month of November:

Nov. 16
Gabe's Christmas wish list. He is so creative!
********************************************************
Nov. 17
Gabe is improving at the piano. He could be better if he'd apply himself. Still, he seems to enjoy the songs out of the Faber books.
*******************************************************

Nov. 15-18
Yep, another of my art projects. Don't worry, I don't have any more coming up anytime soon. This last art project was done in Prismacolor colored pencils. For my reference, I used the picture I took of Elisa's flowers she received after her play. There's not a whole lot to say about this project-I did enjoy doing it. I'm fairly happy with the results. Have I mastered colored pencil technique? Not really. I'm sure there's plenty I could improve on, but I think I got all the values in the right place. Here are pictures of the process:
All finished!

Nov. 18
Sometimes, randomly, I'll come downstairs and find Gabe fast asleep on the couch. He will never tell why, either. Silly Ian decided to lie down too!
********************************************************************

Nov. 18
Ian got a new shirt! Ok, I made it (Luigi design and all) the previous month, but this was the first time he wore it. I made it large enough that it should fit him next year (I hope).
********************************************************************
Nov. 18-Mesa Temple open house walk-though. Elisa brought her friend with. I'm surprised her parents let her go, haha. We stopped at Wendy's on the way, and they forgot Erik's chicken sandwich. Dummies. The walk-through didn't take too long, even though there were lots of people there. The renovated inside was very pretty, but the kids started to get bored near the end of the tour. After the walk-through, we took a few pictures and headed over to the new visitor's center. The kids played for maybe 10 minutes before we left. They wanted to get ice cream at the BYU creamery, but the line was too long. We hitched a ride on a golf cart to the van. We visited Wendy's to get Erik's forgotten sandwich and to buy frostys for the kids.

Elisa and Kristi before we put on the shoe-cover booties

After the walk-through. A seemingly endless line of people even as we left.

Bad lighting for a picture.

Playing by the fountain

Another try for a good picture of Erik and I.

Elisa's friend too our family picture. I nice picture for our Christmas card, if I hadn't already chosen our picture.

3 kiddos with the temple in the background.

Coloring on the wall!

A really neat replica of the new Mesa temple.

Building a temple with the blocks

A fun and short ride on the golf cart

Random November Happenings, Part I

Here are some fun things we did in the month of November:

Nov. 7
Grandma helping Ian put together a project kit.
******************************************************

Nov. 8
Gabe had a dental appointment. He obviously didn't enjoy it. he didn't have any cavities, thankfully. The worst thing was that he missed his "Day of Awesomeness" in which the kids got to play on huge, fun blow-up structures outside. Poor Gabe. I had no idea, if I had, I would have rescheduled his dentist appointment.
**************************************************************

I bought some pillow covers on Amazon (they were really cheap, about $6 for 4 of them) and used them to make a quick table runner. It unfortunately was a bit too bit for the table, but I guess it turned out ok. I wondered if I should have hung it as a banner, but I couldn't find a spot for it.
***************************************************************

Nov. 15
Employees of Honor Health got into the Phoenix Zoo's Zoo Lights for free the 15th and 16th of November. So we went. It was kind of fun though hardly worth the drive down there. I'm so glad we didn't pay anything to see the lights because although they were neat to see, they weren't worth the $16 per person price tag. Seriously you can do that for free, just drive (or walk) around the neighborhood! Ian was grumpy most of the time, I think we spent maybe 20 minutes walked around and then we were done. At the exit, we were allowed to take some Lysol disinfecting wipes the zoo was giving away for free (Why?? Who knows?!). So, I guess it was worth the drive after all when you add in the free wipes.
********************************************************

Here is my Thanksgiving painting I worked from Nov. 9-12th. I first gathered up some fall stuff around the house: the pumpkin Ian picked out from school, a squash my dad gave me, a green apple from my fruit basket, random fake leaves, and a fake sunflower I pulled off from a decoration. I arranged them in what I think is a pleasing way, took a picture, and worked off the picture. I guess I could have worked off the still life, but the in the craft light keeps changing and I wanted to work on the painting when I had the time, not when the sun was in the right spot. Eh. I suppose it's a cheater-job of a still life. Oh well. I wish I would have been more careful in the placement of the outlines on the canvas. I wasn't careful at all (I was sorta in a rush), so the perspective isn't' quite the same as the photo. Whoops.   In order to make this a Thanksgiving painting and not a mere still life, I left room for a phrase. I decided on "Thankful and Blessed". I used white to paint in the letters and then colored red over the top so it would look red and not reddish-brown. I thought I was finished, but when I hung it on the wall, the lettering was really hard to read. So, I went back and outlined the letters in white as to make them more visible. I need to remember that the front room is much darker than my craftroom, so I need to make adjustments for that. Overall, I'm not completely happy with this painting. I'm not a fan of the brown background at all, but I don't know what else to with it do so I guess it stays. I also think there's some weird perspective issues and color choice problems, but for now this is what I have to offer, as far as painting goes:

The still-life I used as my reference.

I painted the pumpkin first, I later went back and improved a few areas.

I painted the butternut squash next.

The apple came next and then the sunflower. The sunflower was the most involved of all the "items" but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Last to paint were the leaves. I think they could have been painted better. Also, I'm not 100% happy with the color balance. Drat.

Mostly finished...now to even out the brown and paint in the letters!

Readable lettering in good lighting...

...not so readable in the front room.

All done! The white outline makes it pop.

A little easier to see.

Nov. 13
Erik risking his life putting up Christmas lights! Yep, he went all out again this year.
**********************************************************

Nov. 14
Ian is such a Mamma's boy. I was taking a nap (Gabe or Elisa took this pic) and Ian came and snuggled with me. Cute of him, but it did wake me up.

Nov. 15
This cutie!! Love him.

Nov. 15
Dear Ian, Santa said NO to any Legos this Christmas! Cute try, though.

Tangled Play Performance (KidStage)

November 6th was the kid's performance of Disney's (adapted) Tangled. Granma and Grandpa drove down to see Ian and Elisa perform in their play. They had been going almost every Tuesday after school for an hour and a half to practice. It certainly wasn't free, but after seeing their performance, I'd say it was certainly worth it! I was a little nervous that the kids wouldn't know what to do on stage since both of the outright refused to practice their lines at home, but it turned out that both kids are natural-born actors! Elisa did quite well. She did forget some of her lines, but other than that and a couple of other things, she did extremely well for her first time in a real play. Ian was a complete ham and remembered all of his lines! He was so funny. He sure enjoyed being on stage. Seems a bit strange, since he can be so super shy around people. Most of the other kids did pretty well. Some not as well but as a whole the play was pretty cute. We had some friends come to see Elisa and Ian, and one of Elisa's teachers gave her some roses at the end of the play. Here are the videos. It isn't the entire play, just the scenes the kids are in:

I forgot to add...Elisa tied for the Tommy Award winner! We were supposed to print out a certificate, but we forgot.
