Painting the Cabinets

Dec. 11-19
The last step of our kitchen renovation was to recolor the cabinets. We chose to have them painted (vs stained) since the process was so much quicker, and because I wanted such a dark color, the grain of the wood that staining would typically preserve wouldn't be noticeable anyway. The price difference was about the same. The original color of our cabinets might have been maple, but 14 years later...that maple was orange color. And that orange color really brought out the orange tones in our floor (and probably visa versa) so our kitchen had a lovely (that was sarcastic) orange hue. Yuck. Besides, maple cabinets are outdated too--not that I care that much about what's on trend, but yeesh nobody wants to live in an orange kitchen. I would think that even if we wanted to up and move, we'd might have had to redo the kitchen anyway, it was that bad. As for color, I didn't want to choose something super trendy (like gray and steel blue are at the moment) because I know really in-style décor can be really out-style within as early as 5 years--I wanted a style that would be long-lasting and more traditional. I chose a dark brown because I think it looks classy and gives a nice contrast to the white countertops and backsplash we chose. IT took me a bit to pick out the color I wanted. I looked through soooo many shades of brown. I finally made my choice by taking all the paint samples out in the sun and comparing them to the brown I wanted.
Anyway, we finally got around to calling the painter guy (Ryan) to come and do the job. He said he'd knock off $500 if we took off the knobs, doors, and drawers ourselves and label them as well. Working together, it didn't take Erik and I long to take everything off and label it...putting everything back together was a different story! Ryan was easy and great to work with, but I didn't like the guys he brought to help him. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they are ex-cons. And I'm pretty sure one of them was high. It took Ryan and his team of losers about 4 days to do everything. Ryan was great to work with and I liked that he came back the following Monday to get the details fixed and painted as best he could. He even ordered us paint that matches our current wall color, I guess we didn't have any. Erik ordered knobs and drawer pulls that matched the appliances off of Amazon. The old ones were nice but unfortunately completely the wrong color. I started working Friday afternoon getting some of the cabinet faces on and screwing in the knobs and drawer pulls. What a pain. The next morning (Saturday) was my piano recital, and most of the morning we worked hard trying to get all the drawer faces and cabinet doors and all the knobs/drawer pulls on before the recital started. I love the way my new kitchen looks! So much better than that orange. The only thing I don't like is the finish shows grime and scratches easier than the old cabinets...but I'll take that over orange any day.

Some of my  kitchen inspiration pictures that I screenshotted from off the internet.

Erik drew a map of the cabinets, while I marked the number in an inconspicuous spot on the door/drawer face and covered it with masking tape so the number wouldn't get painted over. Ian was obsessed with this map and taped it to one of his own and carried it all over the house, silly boy.

The kitchen looked so...messy and exposed for awhile there. Like looking at someone's chest cut open but not as gross.

I tried to recruit my mom into helping me pick out a color, but its no good because my phone camera doesn't and can't show the true colors. Only the sun can.

Ryan and his jail-bird team worked out of our garage.

A lot of work was put into painting inside...most of it seemed to consist of papering off the open spaces so all of our junk didn't get painted along with the cabinets, and after all that work, we ended up with a few drops on the stove front that I have yet to get off.

Don't touch the paint before it sets!

Putting it back together!

I insisted that the baseboard of the island be painted too. Erik wasn't too much into that idea, but Ryan said he'd do it at no extra charge. I figured it couldn't look worse than what was already there, and if we hated it we could always have it painted again. Turns out that I like having the baseboard painted, it really brings the entire kitchen together. I don't care if no one else gets their island baseboard painted along with their cabinets (Erik's argument against, lol)!

Our new kitchen in all it's glory. Erik expressed concerns that going a dark brown would make the kitchen too dark, but it didn't. As a matter of fact, the dark contrasted against the light really brought out the white in the countertops and backsplash, making a nice contrast and balance. I was also considering having the walls behind the cabinets repainted because I wasn't sure if it would clash or be too dark, but luckily it looks nice so I chose not to have the wall repainted. I also really hated our orange floor, but having brown cabinets downplays the orange and brings out the brown. I still hate the floor, but not as much. It will be hard work convincing Erik to have the floors replaced, but for now I'm okay with the floors. When we had our orange cabinets, the oranges played off each other and gosh it just looked so orange and awful. Just for the record...orange is my LEAST favorite color of them all (sorry Erik). And to have my kitchen looking orange--not pleasant for me. Now I love my kitchen!

A before/after pic. Good riddance to orange cabinets!

December Randomness, Part II

Even more random fun stuff we did in December:

Dec. 8
We got the tile & grout professionally cleaned. Some girl did it. I had her seal just the kitchen area. I think we'll seal it ourselves from now on because its real easy to do (since I watched her do it, I know now) and would save us lots of money. The first time (last year) we had the floors cleaned I did notice quite a bit of difference. I didn't notices as much this year, but then again...we didn't have 14 years to let the dirt build up. It did help a little for sure, before pic on the left, after on the right.

Painting #1
Painting #2 before and after
Dec. 8-10
I had it in my head that I wanted to do some Christmas paintings (desert themed, of course). I used a few references, especially for the 1st one (saguaro w/ lights), but the 2nd I mostly made up from my head. I light the way the first one turned out, but the second one I think the sky is too dark, but it would have taken way too long to fix, so I just left it. Originally I made the 2nd one a continuation of the night sky, but I realized that made no sense at all with there being a cardinal so I made it a day version instead. And fixed a few other things. I think they turned out ok. I don't know if I'll display them again though.

Dec. 8
Elisa made hot chocolate bombs at her girl's church activity. She had so much fun watching it pop open in the hot milk, and even more fun consuming it!

Dec. 10
She's "100 percent sure" she doesn't want to go. Yep, she ended up going. We are trying to get her to say what she means and mean what she says. She has a tendency to blurt things out in accordance to whatever strong emotion is passing through her at the moment.

Dec. 13
Other Christmas painting. This one was only 8x10 so it didn't take too long to do.

Dec. 13
Gabe being silly. He LOL'd when I showed him this picture.
**********************************************************

Dec. 14
Us in our stupid masks at Lowe's. We were getting a copy of the mail key since one of the kids (most likely Ian) took mine somewhere upstairs and lost it.

Dec. 17
My order from Yankee Candle came! Yay for $9 candles. Half went to Makayla for Christmas.

December Randomness, Part I

Here's some (of many!) fun stuff we did in the month of December:

Dec. 1
My sweet neighbor thought of me and bought me this cheese advent calendar! She knows what I like, haha. I was super excited to try it. There were only 6 different cheeses, so after a few weeks I got kinda tired of it.
***********************************************************

Dec. 1
Gabe wrote a note to Erik. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what Gabe wants? Looks like money. I'm sure this isn't the last time one of the kids is going to ask Erik for money!
*********************************************************

Dec. 2
We all went out to Bobby Q's, where I had probably one of the best burgers I've ever had in my whole life. It was so good, it didn't need any ketchup. Also amazingly delicious are the Q rolls, deep fried egg rolls stuffed with delicious brisket. I don't think I've gone to Bobby Q's without all of the the food being extremely delicious.

Dec. 3
I'm know I'm one of the few weirdos who finds rodents cute, but to find a rat in our backyard...not so cute. Actually Erik found it in the backyard.
*********************************************************

Dec. 4
I made Elisa a new shirt using the same fabric as the one I made for Tootsie. Ian insisted on being in the photo!
***************************************************************

Dec. 4
Ian making his gingerbread house with Grandma. I bought gingerbread kits for the kids at Fry's for $5. Gabe got frustrated with his and gave up. These kits are hard and very very messy!
***************************************************

I made her a mask to match her shirt.
Dec. 4
We all went out to Ajo Al's for dinner. It was pretty yummy!
************************************************************

Dec. 5
Silly Ian is obsessed with sporks. He brings them home from school lunch regularly. Sometimes he'll hide one in his sock and sometimes his pocket. This time when he put the spork in his pocket, it found a little hole to wiggle out of and got itself stuck inside the lining of his pants. I spent more time than I'd like trying to fish that spork out of his pants, but there was a small hole in the pocket that I didn't see the first time.
****************************************************

Feb. 5
I made a loaf of bread using seminola flour. It was okay, good right out of the oven but didn't retain its moisture for long after.

November Random Happenings, Part II (Tootsie's Visit)

Here are some random stuff we did in November:

Nov. 25
Tootsie and I went out shopping and stuff and went out to The Bento Box for lunch. Sorry, bad lighting! We ordered Japanese-style jalapeño poppers and they were so good that I'm hoping to go back for more someday soon!
*****************************************************************

Nov. 26
What a mess. Erik and the boys went through the immense piles of Legos and sorted them by color. It was a really long process mostly since there were so many Legos, but also because Gabe and Ian kept dumping the separate bins that Erik had made. Those Legos are put up, up, and away now and I don't want to bring them out again. Like, ever.
************************************************************************

Nov. 30
Tootsie/Cindy and I went out to lunch at Thai Chili 2go and ate it at a park since it was so nice out. A roadrunner came up to us begging for food, I took a picture of it instead.

Nov. 30
I made Tootsie a running shirt! We found this super soft neon polyester fabric at Walmart. I made one shirt but it didn't fit her properly. Since it was made from my pattern that I had altered specifically for myself, it fit me perfectly so I kept it for myself. I made some adjustments and whipped up a new one for her to keep. Here she is modeling it just before she left to catch a flight back home to Utah. I dropped her off at the airport after picking up Chipotle for dinner.

Thanksgiving Dinner 2020

Here is my Thanksgiving post! Mark had to get back to work, so he left at night (Tuesday) and drove all night long up to Cedar Hills, but Tootsie stayed. Grandma and Grandpa also came down to have Thanksgiving with us! Erik smoked a turkey this year, he was planning on it and looking forward to it. I also tried my hand at making homemade cranberry sauce. Other than that, it was our standard, typical Thanksgiving dinner feast! Everything turned out quite well, the turkey was a success, and I liked my cranberry sauce. After eating Thanksgiving dinner...well I don't think we did much but hang around because we were so full and there was nowhere to go. I'm sure we watched movies. In any case, a fun and delicious Thanksgiving day! Here are the pictures I took of the dinner:

The turkey looked like a monsterous butterfly. Erik took out the giblets to make gravy. I don't believe the gravy turned out that great.

Cranberries are used to make red dye, and I believe it! Cranberries have such a beautiful, intense red color. The gorgeous red color, delicious smell, and the sound of them popping while under heat was a feast of the senses. I enjoyed making this sauce, and especially enjoyed eating it!

Grandma and Ian almost matched! Grandma wore her Thanksgiving apron and Ian wore his (very silly) thanksgiving vest.

The turkey after taking it out of the smoker. Yum!

Already to eat!

The buffet spread.

My plate full of yums. Just missing the roll!
