Iceland: Day 4 - Part 2, Reynisfjara Basalt Columns and Skogafoss Falls

After visiting the black sand beach, we drove around the cliff to the beach on the other side. The beach was a black stone beach with basalt columns: Reynisfjara. We stayed long enough to take a few pictures.

The kids walked straight through the crowd and started climbing the pillars.

Another great picture of Gabe

Lots of interesting rock formations besides columns.

Walking back to the parking lot.

Next, we drove to Skogafoss. After taking a few pictures of the base of the waterfall, we hiked up to the top, which consisted of over 460s stairs. The kids were tired and wanted to go back, but Erik and I wanted to keep walking to see the other waterfalls. After we got to the third or fourth waterfall, we finally relented and turned around to go back to the car.

Everyone was tired from climbing all those stairs.

The trail kept going, but the kids didn't want to hike any more.

So many waterfalls. The trail continued along this canyon, but we gave up and turned around.

Time to go back down the stairs.

We drove a short distance to a museum, where we ate dinner at the Freya Café. A performance of a jazz trio was just finishing, and we appeared to be the only ones who ordered food. Erik and I shared the leg of lamb.

After dinner, we drove to our Airbnb, which was about 30 minutes away. We were at the base of several mountains with a nice view of the countryside. Erik and I went for a short walk down the dirt road to a stream. After that, we sent the kids to bed.

There was a light mist falling as we walked around the stream.

  1. Those are extremely tall basalt columns! That's a big high waterfall. I would have made it maybe halfway up.
