I woke up wide awake around midnight. I laid in bed and an hour later I heard one of the kids walking down the (extremely loud) staircase. Then I heard someone else. I was done with laying in that bed, so I put my robe and glasses on and went down the stairs to find Gabe and Ian up and wide awake. I read my book for a while to pass the time, and around 3:30 I tried going back to bed. Did I sleep? I’m not entirely sure…I was somewhere between being asleep and awake. I got back up again around 6am. Ian was also awake. I’m not sure that he ever did go back to sleep. We ate some breakfast from our grocery trip the night before—little toast crackers with spreadable cheese, bread and jam, one yogurt, and one panna cotta. Elisa tried a chocolate tart, and it was delicious! It was all delicious actually. Erik, who had been sleeping the entire time, finally came down after we finished eating breakfast. Then he took Elisa and Ian to the nearby patisserie for some more breakfast treats.
I took a bath in the huge bathtub upstairs, and Ian took one after me. After getting ready to go, we drove to Eze. The parking garage was a big pain to maneuver. Our first stop was the Galimard Parfum store. I was quickly talked into getting a perfume sampler pack, which I was happy to get. Meanwhile, Erik went next door to buy some sandwiches, a quiche, and a chocolate eclair. Then we walked to the medieval village, which was an uphill climb with way too many people buzzing around. There was a botanical garden at the top, but we didn’t feel like paying to get into, so we went back down. We stopped at a little shop where I bought Elisa a little vaporizer bottle of perfume (actually body spray).
Then we went back to the car, had a heck of a time trying to back out, and we drove to and through Monaco. We tried to find a parking spot by the beach, but we couldn’t, so we drove to a mountain top, through Nice, and to Turrettes sur Loup to yet another medieval village. We walked around, stepped inside a cathedral for a bit, and then stopped for ice cream. There, they offered violet flavored ice cream which Elisa ordered. I ordered the rose. Ian got upset because…well we will just have to guess because he did not say. I’m guessing it had something to do with him being too shy to ask for two scoops instead of the one that he got. And then Erik got mad at Ian for being upset, haha. We were getting hungry, so we stopped by a restaurant that said the kitchen was closed. Then the waitress asked the manager, and he said he’d keep the kitchen open for us. We ordered once we had figured out what the items were. I ordered the duck skewer, Erik ordered the fish, Gabe got the beef, and Ian and Elisa shared a plate of prawns with the head and legs still on them. The food was pretty good, and the fries were much better at this place.
Our last stop was a little shop next door to the restaurant. We picked out some violet jam, syrup, and candies. Elisa and I bought some cute tins with a little bit of perfume (eau de toilette/body spray) and a little soap in 4 different but yummy scents. Elisa picked out a cute keychain, and Erik found some nunettes to try. Only the first day and lots of souvenirs bought! We went back to the airbnb where we had some strawberry tart for dessert that Erik bought at the store the other night. It was yummy. I wanted to sign up to make perfume at the Galimard perfumery the next day. Luckily, Grasse was only 15 minutes away, so I bought tickets for Elisa and me. Finally, I went to go to bed since I was tired from being up at midnight the night before.
I liked the medieval village in Eze except for the hot climb. It was very quaint with narrow hilly walkways like some of the other French medieval villages.
