Maui Trip: Arrival and Day 1 - Hana Beach Park, Wailua Falls, and Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach

Saturday, October 5, 2024

This was the first year that the kids had an entire week off for fall break. Erik managed to get work off as well, so we decided to visit Maui again since it had been over 5 years since the last time we visited. We left the house for the airport at 8am. Grandma and grandpa had arrived the night before. After an uneventful flight, we arrived in Maui around 2pm.

We grabbed our luggage, chose a white van for our rental car, and stopped at a food truck area not even 5 minutes away because we were hungry. I ordered a Thai red curry. It was yummy but super hot. Elisa ordered pork sliders, Erik two tacos, and Gabe and Ian got hamburgers.

Elisa ordered pulled pork sandwiches, she ate one and saved the other one for later.

My Thai food. I was so hungry and it was really good!

A good shot of Grandma eating. Haha. Ian and Gabe ordered hamburgers.

After eating, we drove all along the Road to Hana. It’s not my favorite drive and I felt slightly nauseous during the drive. Erik and his parents went to the general store and the ranch store to get some groceries for breakfast and snacks. A few of us had peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. We went to bed fairly early since we were tired.

We all woke up early since we were still used to Phoenix time. Almost everyone was up to see the sunrise over the ocean. We turned on conference, which had started at 6 AM local time. We each ate a random breakfast during conference of oatmeal, peanut butter sandwiches, and a fried egg.

After the first conference session ended, we walked down to Hana Beach Park where we had the beach to ourselves. We swam for almost 2 hours, and the kids enjoyed playing on the boogie boards. After changing out of our swimsuits, we finished the last session of conference. Next, we found some food trucks for lunch, and everyone was able to try something different. Erik and I shared an ahi tuna poke bowl. Gabe and Ian had another hamburger. Elisa had an açai bowl to herself, but she wasn’t able to finish it. The rest of us gladly finished it for her.

Elisa was busy hunting for crabs.

Poke bowl. Yum!

Elisa wanted the acai bowl

After lunch, we drove around Hana. First, we drove to Wailua Falls, which is just off the road to Hana. We got out of the car and walked twenty feet to the waterfall. Some people were swimming in the pool of the falls, and the water didn't feel too cold. Next, we stopped at the old United Church of Christ and its accompanying Wananalua Congregational Church Cemetary. Grandma wanted to see the Church of Jesus Christ, which was small and not built in the typical style of other LDS meetinghouses.

Erik wanted to check out the red sand beach, so we all walked from our AirBNB past the school to the trail head. Marsha stayed behind when she saw how steep the trail was, but the rest of us walked along the trail and around the hill until we arrived at the beach. Some of the trail was steep and slippery; other parts were quite narrow. A couple people were swimming in the water, but the sand was more like very small, red lava rocks. Hiking back along the trail, grandpa bumped his head on one of the sharp lava rocks on the cliff side. He said he was OK, but it looked like half his face was covered in blood. He and Erik stayed behind to wash his face off in the ocean while the rest of us walked back to the house.

For dinner, nobody was very hungry except for Ian. Erik and I took Ian to the Hana Ranch Restaurant, and everyone else stayed home to eat snacks and peanut butter sandwiches. I ordered the grilled ono sandwich, Ian got chicken tenders, and Erik ordered the chicken satay. It was plenty of food, and we were all stuffed. After dinner, we went back to the rental house where Erik and Ian played the Maui version of monopoly. Then Ian, Erik and I sat in the hot tub for a while.

  1. That was a scenic drive to Hana and nice scenery around the town. You caught grandpa eating, too.
