San Fran Trip Part III A: Exploratorium and a Downtown Lunch

We drove to the Muir Woods on Friday morning only to discover that the parking lot was full. The only way to get a parking space was to make a reservation online. Erik quickly made a reservation for later in the afternoon, which was the earliest availability. Oh well. We were able to enjoy the scenic drive along the bay and across the Golden Gate Bridge.

To pass the time, we went back to San Francisco to find some food. We first went to Bob's Donuts. They are famous for their $11 donuts that are as big as a dinner plate. We tried some of their regular sized donuts and eclairs. Next we went to a famous sandwich shop called Molinari's Delicatessen. It is a small Italian market and sandwich shop right next to Chinatown.

Inside Molinari's Delicatessen

We ate right in front of the Delicatessen on some small tables in the sidewalk.

My Italian Sandwich with a combo of salami meats.

Downtown San Fran is so much more cool and impressive in person than the camera can capture, but I tried anyway!

We still had some more time after lunch, so we went back by the piers to the Exploratorium. It is a huge science center with tons of hands on exhibits. We were there for a couple hours, but we only saw a small fraction of the displays.

Cute daddy/daughter facial feature swap

Ian had fun swinging this thing (??) around

It took some dude 40 years to make this toothpick sculpture

Gabe enjoyed playing with this huge awesome bubble

The thermal camera shows a lighter color for hotter surfaces. Our faces were hot but our clothes and glasses were not.

The floating mirror can make it appear that you are standing in the air. Gabe and Elisa didn't quite get it to look realistic.

There were 2 drinking fountains at the Exploratorium, but one of them was mounted on a toilet bowl. The sign explained that both fountains were clean and provided clean drinking water, but psychologically, most people couldn't force themselves to drink from the toilet bowl fountain. The kids laughed at the toilet but absolutely refused to put their mouths close to it. Erik and I showed them how it's done.
I felt really gross drinking from this particular drinking fountain

  1. More fun for the kids! At the end of our time at the exploratorium I realized there were other areas of science like biology and organisms that would have been nice to experience. The eclairs and donuts were good!
