Thurber Reunion: The Arrival

Sunday July 18

We packed up (most of) our stuff and left around 11:30am to grab some lunch. We wanted Angelica’s initially, but it was closed. We decided on Iceberg instead. It took so much longer than we expected. Then I realized I forgot my book, so we had to go back and get it. We left later than we wanted to, but it didn’t matter too much. We arrived around 4pm just at check-in with everyone else. It was a 4.5 hour drive from St George to Flagstaff. We listened to the audiobook “I Survived the Children’s Blizzard of 1888”. I think I might have been asleep for half of it. We all arrived within minutes of each other. The cabin was huge and awesome. Everyone got their own room that they wanted or at least were ok with. My (and Erik’s) room was obvious: it had a piano! A run-down, poorly-cared for piano, but better than nothing. Also, the room didn’t have a floor above it for people to stomp around and make lots of noise. I got started on the spaghetti dinner not too long after we arrived. Lisa and Eric were supposed to be in charge of the dinner, but I ended up doing it because it might not have gotten done. They also didn’t bring the corn or the garlic bread sticks like I asked. I had to improvise and make my own garlic bread using some garlic salt with parsley mixed with butter that was already there. Dinner turned out fine. For the record (for next trip)-- I used two packs of spaghetti noodles, three jars of sauce, and 2/3 bag of meatballs. We also found some green olives in the fridge.

Grandpa Ron, Grandma Julie, and Uncle Michael caught up to us in Flagstaff.

The kids always get to eat first.

Elisa slept in the attic kid's cave high up on the fourth floor.

Everyone enjoyed the basement full of old arcade games, skeeball, and ping pong.

Everyone took a turn playing cornhole.

After dinner we sat around outside, chatted, and enjoyed the fine weather and nice backyard while the kids went in the hot tub. We put the kids to bed and then I got in the hot tub. Erik joined me, then my mom, and then Lisa. I slept ok. It took too long for me to fall asleep. The bed frame was obnoxiously loud and squeaky, but otherwise I slept fine.
