Ian and Erik woke up early, so they made pancakes and scrambled eggs for breakfast for everyone. Ian spilled some extra salt in the eggs, but it wasn’t too bad. Even though it rained a couple of times in the morning, we got ready to drive to Pipiwai trail. It took about 30 minutes to get there, and we were able to make it before the crowds. It took us about two hours to hike up to the waterfall and back, and all the kids were able to make the hike. Grandma and grandpa went up to the first waterfall, back down, and then on a short loop trail.

We drove back to the rental to rest for about an hour. Next, it was time for us to use our reservation for Waianapanapa State Park. We got there a little bit after 3 PM, and we made our way down to the black sand beach. At first, the beach just looked like a bunch of rocks, but we found the sandy part of the beach, which was probably the nicest black sand beach that we have been to. Ian had fun swimming for about an hour, and Gabe and Elisa looked a little jealous.

On our way back, we stopped at the Hana Farms Market where we bought some passionfruit syrup, chocolate tea, and a star fruit for Elisa. We went back to the house to change the kids out of their wet clothes, and then we went to the food trucks down the road (again) for dinner. Ian and Elisa shared a pepperoni pizza. I ordered pumpkin curry. Gabe got another hamburger. Erik ordered a kebab of garlic shrimp (no pics). Back at the house, I played a game of Maui-opoly with Ian and with Elisa, at least until she got upset that I took a picture of her and stomped off. The kids were pretty tired, so they went to bed a little early. Erik and I sat in the hot tub for a little bit before I took a shower and we went to bed.
I'm glad Ian went all the way to the top on the hike. The black sand beach was really nice where the sand was fine and felt good walking through it.
